6 Majestic New SUV's Coming To India!

The 2016 Delhi Auto Expo was chock full with SUV unveilings. With premium and luxury players pushing hard into the segment this year, the world of monster wheels is getting all kinds of crazy. From American carmaker and SUV specialist Jeep, which is ready to launch in India with three gorgeous models, to clever German manufacturers like Volkswagen and Mercedes-Benz who are retooling their sedans in order to build SUVs out of them and even Nissan, the Japanese carmaker which is manufacturing fuel-efficient hybrid SUVs, there are more than a few road-conquering rides making a play for the Indian market. Check out the ones headed your way.

1. Jeep grand Cherokee SRT

Jeep grand Cherokee SRT

American carmaker Jeep is ready to roll in India. It’s unveiled three models at the Expo – a 2.8-litre Jeep WranglerUnlimited, a 3-litre Grand Cherokee and the absolute batshit range-topping Grand Cherokee SRT. The high-performance SRT has one of the largest engines we’ve seen at the expo this year – a 6.4-litre V8 that produces 475hp of power. To keep up with the steroid-addled ride, Jeep’s kitted the SRT with 20-inch alloys cloaked in Pirellis and Brembo brakes too to reign in any displays of over-enthusiasm from drivers who get behind the flat-bottomed steering wheel. All three models are expected to launch in India later this year.

2.Mercedez Benz G500 4x4²

This monster is nearly two metres high, and nearly as wide. You’d almost need a ladder to mount this ride that has a ground clearance of 450mm. Powering this hunk of metal is a twin-turbocharged 4-litre V8 that produces 410hp of power. Mercedes claims that it has a top speed of 208kph, and frankly it’s a terrifying to even imagine the sight of this ginormous vehicle attempting to max out on a road next to you.

3. Jaguar F-Pace

Jaguar F-Pace

While Jaguar’s XE sedan landed quite a bit of attention at the press presentation, there was another stunner from Jaguar that got mildly neglected as soon as Katrina Kaif walked in and began posing alongside the XE. The F-Pace is Jaguar’s first-ever SUV and it looks gorgeous in the metal. Although JLR hasn’t confirmed this yet, the F-pace should launch in India later this year. With its sexy coupe-meets-SUV styling, a state-of-the-art infotainment system whose computing power is said to be more powerful than that of a Boeing 777, and its capable 180hp 2-litre engines, there’s really little to fault this Jag.

4. BMW X1

BMW X1

The second-gen model of this crossover was launched here at Rs 29.9 lakh for the base variant. All the new X1’s variants feature a 2-litre engine that produces 190hp and 400Nm of torque. But spend an additional 10lakh over the base variant and your X1 gets the sick M Sports pack cosmetic treatment.

5.Volkswagon Tiguan

Volkswagon Tiguan
VW showcased the second-generation of the Tiguan at the Expo. It’s lighter, longer, wider and set lower than the first-gen model. This seven-seater SUV is built to take on the likes of the Land Rover Discovery Sport and BMW X3. VW hasn’t confirmed whether it will introduce the 1.4-litre turbocharged petrol engine that’s good for 148hp or the 2-litre diesel engine that produces 217hp. Undoubtedly, we’re rooting for the latter.

6.Mercedez-Benz GLC

Mercedez-Benz GLC
If you’re a fan of the C-Class sedan, then this one’s for you. Built on the same underpinning as the C-Class, the GLC is as well-mannered as a sedan but built to take on the rough too. Although Mercedes haven’t yet declared the overall for the variant that they will launch in India, they’ve hinted at bringing the 1.2litre diesel engine so that its sales aren’t affected by the ban on the sale of big-engined diesel in Delhi.
